This is a good quality version of the Ross 7" f5.6 (with stops to f22) Homocentric convertible lens which is set in a nicely used brass barrel, with a very smooth operating iris and coming with a very good condition flange, which is probably not the original. The serial number is 93987, and the year of manufacture is approx 1920. At the end of this text, there is a very useful post from the 'Large Format Photography Forum' regarding the Homocentric line of lenses together with an extract from a Ross sales brochure (courtesy of the excellent /) Coverage wise, and with both elements in place, it is probably best for 5x7 but should be able to achieve whole plate size, 6.5 x 8.5" and with the rear element only, 10x8 is very easily covered but with a loss of sharpness, fully open, over the entire projected image but this considerably sharpens up when the lens is stopped down. The focal lenth solely with the rear element, is 14" Looking at the condition of the glass, this is clear and bright with the usual signs of cleaning marks and completely free of balsam separation, chips, scratches or fungus. There are no dings to the outer rim of either of the elements The measurements are:- front and rear element - width 47mm; total length 48mm; and the outside width of the flange is 70mm This is a good quality lens from a reputable British manufacturer
