I am having a very hard time not writing a check out right now to keep this piece for myself. This is the nicest Mexican silver abalone necklace I've ever seen. It's very, very, VERY well made. Each link is a long octagon, with mosaic abalone shell inlaid between the border of the link and an east/west marquise sterling shape in the center of each link. The colors in the shell are vibrant like you wouldn't believe. They actually shine with green, blue, and pink. T are 14 links altogether, making this necklace a wearable 16 1/2" in length. The closure is a hefty tongue and box closure that stays together very securely. The links are each 3/4" long by 3/8" wide, and are solid sterling on the back. I can't emphasize enough (and I'm not saying this just to sell it) how nice this piece is. Sometimes people "pooh pooh" abalone shell jewelry, but this is a masterpiece. It's from Taxco, Mexico, as evidenced by the signature TG-231. The artist's name associated with this signature is Enrique Gama Gama, as is evidenced on page 267 in Penny Morrill and Carole Berk's book, Mexican Silver . It weighs a whopping 2.37 OUNCES, or if if you prefer grams, it's 73.8 grams. The funny thing is, though, that it doesn't feel TOO heavy for you to wear it on your neck. It actually feels great.
