his graphically stunning quilt is a rare example of the complex overall pattern Gordian Knot. It's beautifully pieced (though if you examine the overall pattern, you'll note a subtle slip of the pattern at about 2 o'clock where two widths of red rest side by side without white between them) and particularly gloriously quilted in unexpected long rigid feathered boughs. The quilt still displays handsomely and the quilting is richly rewarding up close, but the quilt has two types of flaws: thinning, splits and holes to the gauzy red throughout and a very crisp red binding that suggests the quilt was cut down and rebound with a wobbly perimeter at a later date. I would estimate the quilt dates to around 1900. SizeThe perimeter is quite wobbly, but the quilt measures about 73" x 75" . The smallest white squares at the intersections are less than 1 inch square. The red strips range between 3/4 inch and 1 inch wide. Quilting The hand-quilting is exquisite, with 7-10 little stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. The pieced sections are quilted over with diagonal lines spaced about 1-inch apart, but the real treat is in the open white areas which are individually quilted with sharply angled rigid feathered boughs. These have crisp double-line center veins and an infill of sharp, elongated hanging diamonds filling in around them. The five large open white squares have lavish feathered wreaths in the same style, diagonal lines filling in around their corners and crisp square gridding at about 5/8-inch at their centers. Faint pencil line traces are often still visible on the white of the quilt. Construction The quilt appears to be entirely machine-pieced. Binding, Batting & Backing The narrow 1/4-inch straight-grain binding is a lovely finishing touch, but looks to perfect and crisp to be original. It's machine-stitched flat to the front and hand-stitched tight on the reverse. The batting is super thin and completely even. The backing is the same supple white muslin used on the front. Condition The quilt's condition is strong, supple and clean. The main issues are the consistent splits, tears and wear holes into the red and the wobbly perimeter where the quilt appears to have been cut down and rebound less squarely. Reserves I don't publicly disclose reserves, but am always happy to tell you a reserve privately if you just email me. I know this can help you decide which listings to bid on. DetailsHave I missed something? My intention is to tell and especially show you everything you might want to examine about a quilt if you were shopping here in person. I try to provide you with an exhaustive description, but if I've overlooked something basic in the listing or you just have a question about a small detail, don't hesitate to inquire. ContactI like to provide you personal service, so feel free to email me directly at . ShippingI ship Priority Mail and UPS Ground. There are no packing or hidden fees and I often cover part of the shipping cost for you. I also pick up any additional costs to fully insure. If it will save money between our locations, I use flat rate Priority boxes whenever items will fit. In the event that the shipping costs costs less, you'll receive a Paypal refund for the difference. Overseas shippingI charge exact Priority shipping costs. I usually pay for full insurance for you. Many overseas buyers find it convenient to have quilts held for a few weeks or months, so a whole batch can ship at once for combined shipping savings. This is no problem--I just ask that each win be paid for in a timely manner. When you're done shopping, I pack the group and bill you for the combine...
