FABLES of AESOP & OTHERS by SAMUEL CROXALL/196 PICS/LEATHER/RARE 1798, $200+ FABLES OF AESOP AND OTHERS. TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH. WITH INSTRUCTIVE APPLICATIONS AND A CUT BEFORE EACH FABLE. BY SAMUEL ROXALL. London: Printed for A. Millar, etc., 1798. New Edition, Improved. Very Rare.A solid original 18th century edition of this rare and fascinating book. The book contains 196 fables each with a woodcut and with a moral (application). The book is solid and complete and it retains the original leather covers. Published more than 210 years ago, this edition is now long out of print and quite rare, as there are no other copies listed for sale on the intenret, worldwide, at any price. Therefore it is now virtually inobtainable. Other early editions sell for hundreds of dollars. Such a nice edition is not likely to come up for sale again soon on ebay. From Cock and the Jewel (fable): "A brisk young cock, in company with two other pullets, his mistresses, raking upon a dunghill for something to entertain them with, happened to scratch up a jewel; he knew what it was well enough, for it sparkled with an excellent bright lustre; but not knowing what to do with it, endeavoured to cover up his ignorance with a gay contempt. So, shrugging up his wings, shaking his head, and putting on a grimace, he expressed himself to this purpose: 'Indeed you are a very fine thing; but I know not any business you have here. I make no scruple of declaring, that my taste lies quite another way; and I had rather than one grain of dear delicious barley, than all the jewels under the sun." In 1720 he edited A Select Collection of Novels written by the most celebrated authors in several languages .[ 9] In its four volumes were eighteen complete or extracted works by such authors as Madame de la Fayette , Miguel de Cervantes , Nicolas Machiavelli , the Abb� de St. R�al , and Paul Scarron . So successful was this that he extended it to six volumes containing nine new works in 1722. [10 ] Further editions under different titles followed into which some English works were also introduced. But Croxall was to achieve even greater success with his other work of 1722, The Fables of Aesop and Others ,[ 11 ] which were told in an easy colloquial style and followed by 'instructive applications'. Aimed at children, each fable was accompanied by illustrations which were soon to find their way onto household crockery and tiles.
