This wonderful, hand-carved snuff box from the 1700s depicts a reclining dog. It measues 4 3/4" from snout to curve of tail, about 1" in height, and 1 3/4" across the widest part of the underside, with GREAT patination and what appear to be tiny metal bands around the carved eyes. Our research indicates that it is European (likely Dutch, likely fruitwood), with characteristics typically seen on items produced in the second half of the 18th-century - i.e., the snuff compartment door is on the bottom, and it's attached via a metal peg through a carved 'tongue'. Note that the 1969 Edward Pinto book, TREEN AND OTHER WOODEN BYGONES, confirms the origins and age of this piece, and it also pictures a similar 18th-century reclining dog snuff box - see plate 368, item 'Q'. Our next two photos show the bottom of this box - first with the 'door' closed, next with it open. Overall condition is excellent, with two small separations to the wood being the only issues of note. We show these in the following pix - and in both photos the box is upside-down. First is an age crack under the tail; second is a line at the bottom right, running from the metal door-affixing peg across the front leg to the paw - it looks as though it's been there a LONG time, perhaps since the hole was first drilled or the peg inserted. This snuff box is in original condition, with a superb patina. The only cleaning we did was a 'once-over' with a soft dry brush, which removed some of the accumulated surface dust. We'll let the new owner decide whether to take any further steps toward cleaning / preserving this rare item.
