I am very proud to offer this fabulous mid 19c Chinese export gold gilt lacquer brise fan. This fan was produced in Canton, China during the height of the China Trade era around the c1840s for export to the West. This is no doubt the most striking gold gilt lacquer brise fan that I have ever come accross with the quality of workmanship and minute details as good as any Japanese raised lacquer treatments such as takamakie and hiramakie that was predominantly performed on boxes as well as the lacquer work that was included with shibayama objects although I have a Japanese card case offered this week that also has the type of lacquer treatments I am mentioning. I have taken photos of the entire opened fan on both sides showing one photo of each side on a royal blue background and another photo of each side on pale light blue background to give you an idea of how bright it is. The two guard sticks inside and out depict fully attired figures both male and female along with bats, Buddhist symbols while having a superbly executed background design of lines and circles that are also shown surrounding the large central vignette on the inside when the fan is opened. The inside shows scrolling vines, leaves, more bats, flowers and a variety of thick and bold applied decorations all framed by a wide continuous fern boarder with a nicely performed reserve that contains numerous figures amoungst garden and pavillion settings with very detailed faces and many red lacquer accents. The finials are also fabulous with each one depicting a different figure in various positions along side some sort of architectual element and tree that are magnificently decorated. There is a fresh silk ribbon with the lacquer work being clean and still retaining its original brightness with only a very tiny amount of rubbing to the lacquer at the high spots on the raised areas. The rest of the fan is in excellent condition with just the iinside of the edge of each guard stick showing a bit of rubbing from opening and closing the fan and there is a total of (19) sticks which I believe there is one or two missing but are really difficult to notice. Size: Length 8" x Width (when fully opened) 15" This is definately a wonderful opportunity for the collector to own a very impressive and one of a kind Chinese export fan so bid to win as you will not be dissappointed.
