Welcome to Antiques & Moore!
This listing is for a STUNNING Victorian Period (c. 1880-90s) silver-plated soup tureen that would be the show-stopper on any buffet table. The tureen stands 11 1/2" high to the top of the deer's antlers and 11" wide with a top diameter of 6 3/4". The presentation of the design on this tureen includes a wonderful Greek key band around the top of the base which an elaborate 3-dimensional deer head on each side and stands on four tall realistic deer legs. The silver is textured on the deer heads and the body of the base has a lovely engraved shell design on each side. The lid has a cut-out for the ladle to rest and is also decorated with a matching engraved shell design on each side below the full body of the reclining deer resting on top. The deer's body is also realistically textured. Around the outer edge of the lid is an engraved ribbon design. This fabulous soup tureen is a wonderful representative of the elaborate Victorian taste in silver meant to be used during the multiple-course special occasion dinners. The base is marked with number 1863, however, I can find no other silver manufacturer's marking. The overall condition is exceptional with the silver showing only a few minor signs of use. On the inside rim of the lid is a small spot that is "out of round" although it does not show when the lid is in place and the lid slides on nicely and fits correctly. One antler on the deer's head on the side of the tureen has possibly had an old repair as has one of the antler's on the deer on the lid. Both these repairs are difficult to notice without close inspection and have been done long ago. Neither detract from the impressiveness of this lovely tureen well over 100 years old. This is an unusual piece of Victorian silver-plate that you will be proud to own and will add a certain amount of up-scale whimsy to your buffet tabl e.
