If you are interested in ornamental turning, take a careful look at this offering. we have a rare extensive set of Holtzapffel ornamental cutting tools in the original mahogany box. This fabulous mid to late nineteenth century mahogany box contains over 400 different cutters!!!The top till contains 155, 3 to 4 inch fixed cutters meant for use directly in the slide rest, or held in a tool handle and used with a T-rest. These are in many shapes including round and half round convex and concave shapes, angled cutters, V-shaped cutters, front and side threading cutters, and complex, moulding type cutters. The second drawer contains both small and large fly cutters for use in the vertical and horizontal ornamental turning cutter frames. T are 148 cutters, again in multiple shapes in this drawer. The third drawer contains 136 cutters meant for use in the drilling cutter frame. These will generate decorative stepped patterns as well as convex and concave shapes. All the cutters appear in good condition, but will likely require final resharpening and cleaning. T are a few small areas of rust on the non-cutting surfaces of some of the fixed and fly type cutters from residing in a wooden box for over a century, but this will not affect their cutting performance, and will be remedied with some careful cleaning. The cutter box is sound and the drawers slide well. However t are a couple of pieces of lost corner bead, and one knob requires duplication. The second box contains an original Holtzapffel fixture for sharpening the convex fixed cutters, fly cutters and drills. It consists of a fixture to be mounted in the T-rest, and a brass and steel spindle which is mounted on that. The spindle carries one of a number of tapered conical laps for sharpening a variety of radii. The bottom drawer contains a beautiful multistep mahogany pulley which can be driven via the lathe headstock to drive the lapping spindle. The beautiful dovetailed mahogany box also contains an assortment of drills. The box front has some dings, and t is a small crack in the front molding. However, once again, with some "TLC" and restoration it will be truly beautiful, and it functions well as is. I have never seen a set like this offered on Ebay, and can't imagine what this set would cost to duplicate today. Created by eBay Blackthorne ver. 3.1.96.0
