Although we have several ids, we have decided to use this particular id in order to build more feedback, thus more privileges in accessing other eBay services with this id as well. As for quality, you will notice some of our items will be rare, some are high-end, and some are in-between. We'll have many like items of some, and others we may only have a single item. We may or may not be familiar enough to determine that, but will describe them exactly as they are and try to include as much information to include photographs as possible. However rare, we have been known to be wrong in identification but never once to our advantage. ;-) If you are interested in the name of any of our ID's for reference we have excellent feedback on both! In this auction you are bidding on a Staffordshire ABC plate with two cats, male and female, dancing with one another. We think they are especially appealing with their top hats. It measures 5 1/4" in diameter, and the transferware colors are a nice burgundy color along with a cobalt blue addition to the outer edge. On the back in burgundy is stamped Rd NO 426 over Aynsley and Co. Longton. (a staffordshire district in London) As you can see it is in wonderful condition. Other then the normal age discoloration, t is no damage at all. T are no cracks, chips, breaks, or fractures. Very nice sample from the 1800's and in such fabulous condition. In the 1800's in Staffordshire ABC objects were designed to teach children not only letters of the alphabet but in some cases numbers as well. Further included in this teaching method were values, morals, traditions and other meaningful lessons of life. Often transmitted as well would be knowledge of an important people, places or things. These items were usually used during meals, thus the reason for cups, plates and the like. They were made in a number of sizes, and shapes plates ranging from around 4" -9". Generally the alphabet items appeared with the alphabet on the exterior border either applied or transferred or embossed. The center of the plates generally have a scene of some sort on the front, whether it be a person, animal or just design of some nature. As for the transferware, when the picture was transferred to the cup and fired, the basic color was added. In order to apply more colors it had to be re-fired each time. Often, they were hand tinted in addition to all the colors. Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac was responsible for many of the maxims and moral lessons on maxim ware. Biblical passages and nursery rhymes were also presented on the plates to provide moral lessons and messages to the children. All of our transferware has the usual ware and discoloration that comes with age and in most cases has not been washed. It is up to the new owner to leave it in its original state, or clean it, which ever is their preference. Lovely sample from the days of the earlier skilled potters from days gone by. Please Note: ALL of our auctions are NO RESERVE this week. Please see our other auctions. For Questions please contact SHIPPING: We charge only actual postage and insurance. The postage is based on whatever we are charged to ship and insure the item. We do not charge any packaging or handling fees. Insurance is highly recommended, although not mandatory. We will not be held responsible for anything that occurs following the items' departure. We have just learned from another eBayer that "This actually is a Child's ABC plate that teaches sign language-note inside ring around cats!! We would imagine this would be very difficult to find, thus making this piece even more important.
