This gorgeous box is more than 200 years old and is in fantastic condition. It really is Napoleonic prisoner-of-war work, and is extremely rare museum quality. The inside colors are glorious, as fresh as when it was made. The center large straw-work cover and the two smaller side compartment lids show town or city scapes, and all are different. (Photo no. 3 is a close-up of the large center cover showing the amazing detail and coloring.) The two pincushions are covered in their original green silk which matches the green used in the pictures and the green line which is part of the frame of the mirror in the lid. The mirror has only a few tiny dark âe~beauty spotsâe, which is amazing for one of this age.The two side compartments have circular bottoms, as do the two longer ones which can be pulled out from underneath them. (Photos nos. 5 and 6.) The original red silk ribbons are still attached to the lids of the smaller compartments and to the larger lower ones. All of the original hinges, which seem to be made of a soft animal skin, are still present and working; this is consistent with the box having been made in a prisoner-of-war camp w metal oddments were difficult to acquire. (Two of these hinges can be seen on the back of the box in the last picture.) Four holes in the four corners of the outside bottom of the box attest to w four feet were screwed in, but the feet are no longer present. If they had been part of the original box I am certain they would have been made of bone, and tfore would not be difficult to replace. Not surprisingly, t is some fading to the colors on the outside of the box, providing a softer muted palette which is appropriate for an antique like this one. (See photo no. 7.) The box is 21.5 cm wide x 15.cm deep x 7 cm. high ( about 8 1/2âeoe x 6âe x 2 3/4âe). What a treasure it is!
