Fabulous Vintage Japanese Ikebana Woven Basket. This lot features a beautiful woven bamboo Japanese Folk Ikebana Basket. Many people know about the Japanese art of flower arranging, ikebana, but fewer are aware of the remarkable artistry that goes into the baskets that hold the flowers. Basket makers not only construct the baskets, but also need to tend and pick the bamboo at just the right moment, preparing the bamboo so that it is in the proper condition to be woven into baskets that are light and durable, with complex designs and extraordinary shapes.

This basket I believe is from the Showa Period. (1926) In the 20th century, basket makers became known as bamboo craft artists, requiring about 10 years' of training and discipline. Although the English term weaving is used for both cloth and baskets, the Japanese are specific when referring to basket making and use the term ami to include plaiting, twining, netting, matting, braiding, twisting, interlacing, knitting and crocheting. Early artisans wove baskets from bamboo, known for its toughness and durability, for Japanese tea ceremony and for ikebana flower displays.

This basket is of an oval form. It has a rare double wall construction. This basket shows various insertion techniques:the plain twill plaiting of the inner wall supports the outer one.This antique technique was used so that the viewer can see both the interior and exterior of the basket. Wonderful patina on the basket. In beautiful condition. Tight and solid. Signed on the bottom very faintly "MS". It measures 3 1/4" diameter, height of 1 3/4" . This is a great addition to any of Ikebana art collection. It sells with no reserve.
