FAIRBAIRN SYKES COMMANDO KNIFE Govt & MAKERS STAMP MARK Rare, new and unissued Fairbairn Sykes Commando Knife with leg sheath By John Nowill & Sons, Sheffield Maker & M.O.D. StampedWith out doubt the most famous military dagger in the world. The knife was developed by Captains Fairbairn and Sykes in 1940. They had both served with the Shanghai Municipal Police and were experienced in martial arts which influenced the type of knife they considered the Commandos needed. Sykes idea was to create a knife that should be used delicately with surgical precision - ''as an artist uses his paint brush''. This classic design is what they came up with. The Fairbairn Sykes dagger is a weapon well suited for silencing the enemy quickly and effectively. Otherwise known as the Stiletto knife, and most famously issued to the Commandos, it is just what was needed in close quarter, one to one combat. The Commandos were formed during 1940 at the strategic directive of Winston Churchill and following a suggestion to the War Office by Captains W.E. Fairbairn & E.A. Sykes they were equipped with a new style fighting knife in early 1941. The modified design of the Third Pattern Commando Dagger introduced in 1943 has withstood the test of time and is still issued to British Royal Marine Commandos and other overseas Armed Forces to the present day.
