FAIRIES 6 PANEL LITHOPHANE VICTORIAN LAMP "Fairies" is absolutely phenomenal! Check the close up pictures - six panels of Fairies with artwork by David Delamare! They are from left to right; Fairy Moon, A Little Night Music and Catch a Falling Star. (These same three are repeated on the other side of the lamp) Lithophane Luminaires are based on the Victorian Lithophane Candle Screens that were illuminated from behind with a candle. These Lithophane Luminaire is illuminated from behind with a 60 watt bulb. The process of producing these has not changed over the years since 1827 when they were first made in France. The design is first carved in wax from which a mold is made. The porcelain is then pressed into the mold. Removing it is an extremely delicate process in order not to crack or warp the piece. They are then fired to a temperature of 2300 degree which gives the porcelain a non porous, durable and beautifully translucent property. Only about 40% of the pieces make it through the firing process. The varying thickness of the porcelain produces an breathtakingly beautiful detailed picture when lit from behind! This one is in the natural sepia tones and is just Fantastic! From the front when not lit, it looks like a carved piece of white stone.
