Small quarto, 8-1/2 inches high by 6 inches wide. Limp black leather with yapp edges titled in gilt on the front cover and the spine. The covers are rubbed and the overlapping yapp edges are chipped and torn at the corners and head and tail of the spine. 1,056, [4], 342, xxxi, 64, 144, 94, [2] 112, 24, [8] & [12] pages, illustrated with a color plate, several full-page black & white illustrations and 12 full-page color maps. The front hinge is cracked and the front endpaper is detached. There is a short tear to the bottom edge of one map. Good. Inscribed, signed and dated by the hermit of the Adirondacks Noah John Rondeau to Peru dairy famers Mr. & Mrs. W.O. Clark on Christmas day 1923: "From N.J. Rondeau / Coreys N.Y. / Dec. 25th, 1923 / For / Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Clark / Peru N.Y." Laid into the book is a 5-1/2 inch high by 3-3/8 inch wide snapshot of the hermit Noah John Rondeau, uncommonly attired in a dark suit. Circa 1950's to 60s, the photograph depicts the hermit in front of the steps leading up to a house's front door. Mr. & Mrs. W.O. Clark were dairy farmers who resided in the town of Peru, NY. They were friends of Rockwell Kent, who also had a dairy farm in the Northeastern Adirondacks. From time to time they gave Rondeau lodging. The hermit of the Adirondack High Peaks, Noah John Rondeau (1883-1967) was born and raised in Au Sable Forks, New York, but ran away from home as a teenager. Quite well-read with a keen interest in astronomy, he first lived in Corey on the Raquette River, gaining knowledge of wood-lore and craft from the Abenaki Indian Dan Emmett. Supporting himself as a handyman and caretaker, he also worked as a guide and was occasionally arrested for violating the game laws. Rondeau frequently hunted and trapped in the Cold River region and, in 1929, he began living alone in the wilderness. Rondeau, now calling himself the "Mayor of Cold River City (Population 1)", kept journals in a cipher of his own invention and played the violin for the occasional visitor. By 1947, Rondeau was a celebrity, and was flown by helicopter to make appearances at the National Sportsmen's Show in New York City and other similar events throughout the country. Rondeau left the hermit life, moving to the vicinity of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake when the New York State Conservation Department closed the Cold River area to the public in 1950 following the big blowdown caused by heavy rain and gale-force winds.
