A WORD ABOUT MY COLLECTION
I first came to Hollywood in the early eighties determined to make it in the movie business. When I landed my first job as a screenwriter in 1983, the very first thing I set out to do with my earnings was complete my collection of Famous Monsters. I scoured Southern California, visiting every little Mom & Pop used bookstore (remember those?) I could find. I walked into just such a bookstore in Pasadena one day and a lovely old lady showed me into a dark storage room in the back where sat a nondescript box filled with her son's collection of Famous Monsters - issues 1 - 50. They had been stored in that room for 10 years and all were in superb condition. I purchased them on the spot, took them home and put them all in plastic, after giving them the once over. They have been in my possession for the past 28 years, stored in a dark, climate controlled, smoke free environment. That's a total of 38 years in storage. I had visions of handing down the collection to my own sons, but alas, the world has changed and my boys aren't interested in an old magazine their Dad collected as a kid. Sigh... As any true collector knows, we don't own our collections...we merely rent them. The time has come for my collection to find new landlords (that sound you hear is my wife jumping for joy). It is a bittersweet parting of the ways, for Famous Monsters has been a part of my life since I was nine years old. It made an indelible impression on me then and unknowingly set me on a career path that I still enjoy to this day. I will endeavor to be critical in my description of the magazines' conditions. However, should you have any questions, or require further photos, do not hesitate to inquire. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
