WELCOME TO WONDER VALLEY ANTIQUES & COLLECTIBLES! This is a beautiful mid to late 1800's writing slope or lap desk, I believe the wood is Rosewood, but may be walnut, the color has a beautiful reddish tone. The top of desk is very intricate with triangular shaped pieces of abalone inserted into the top beveled edge, and another border on the top framing an elaborate silver cartouche w normally t would be initials, but this one has the silver and also ivory carved flowers and another type of carved material which is white with brown flecks in it inlaid into ebonized wood. Also, the top border of abolone is lined with silver metal, t are 4 thin strips of it, 2 enclose the black ebonize wood with the abalone, and the other 2 frame this at 1/8" separation. (unsure what kind of silver, t are no markings) The elaborate center design measures 5 1/8" x 3 1/4". Please see last two photos of close-ups of this area, it is much more beautiful in person, the flash washed out the silver and ivory. The desk itself measures 15" x 10 1/2" across top, side depth top to bottom is 5 1/4". The wood glows and feels soft as butter, beautiful patina. As you can see, the square key hole plate is missing, as well as the key. T is a rectangle shaped silver insert above the keyhole, t are no initials on it, or any other markings. The inside writing table has beautiful violet purple lining, it's worn and faded at top edge w it rests on wood, and the center hinged area. The top folds down and t is storage area as well as underneath the bottom half of writing surface. To access the bottom portion, you need to pull out the thin wood strip to be able to pull up the writing surface, like a secret compartment. T are divided areas in the front, t is only one ink bottle with no lid. Overall, the condition is very good for it's age, the front is slightly bowed w the latch is, see photo....also please see close-up photo of front left top corner w t is a slight bulge of the wood and t is a crack which follows along the side of box, but it mimics the wood grain, so it's not too noticeable. T are other little nicks, dings and scrapes, which I consider normal age w This is truly a wonderful antique slope with very intricate detailing, and all the abalone triangles are all intact . I am offering this for a very reasonable starting bid and no reserve!
