This is the fanciest dome top we have done so far this year. This beautiful refinished dome top steamer trunk should date back to the late 1800's. It is a very large dome top with the following measurements: from left to right across the front is 36 inches, from floor to topof dome is approximately 32 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 22 1/4 inches. This trunk is unique in style and has some really nice hardware on it. We have only had about three dome tops in the past that have the metal banding running across the slat boards like this one has, and we are talking about three out of several hundred dome tops that we have refinished. Look at the pictures and you will see what we are talking about. Some of the cast iron hardware has engraved "S's" on them. Some of the other hardware has "X's" and dots on them. We have highlighted some of these areas with black paint. Some of the metal has been removed from this trunk to expose the wood underneath. The wood on this trunk consists of pine base wood, oak outer slat boards, and early ply which makes up the dome top. The wood has been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. The wood has typical beauty marks or character marks on it. These markings include older nicks and dings along with some stress cracks, and some areas if discoloration, all of which are quite common on the majority of the trunks that we refinish. These markings actually make up part of the trunk's antiquity and prove that the trunk has been around for many years. This beautiful ornate dome top comes with the nice original working lock. We have matched up a key so you can lock your personal belongings inside if you want to. The metal parts making up this trunk are not brass. Almost never do we come across American made trunks that are made with all brass hardware. We have hand painted the metal parts in black and gold leaf. What a great combination of vertical and horizontal slat boards the trunk maker chose to use. This would be a very nice chest to store blankets and clothing items in within a bedroom at the foot of the bed or anywhere in your house where storage space is needed. Just think of this one as a big pirate's treasure chest. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. The handle cap metal has an embossed eagle on each cap which we have highlighted with black paint. Going to the inside, we have made a tray or insert for this trunk that rests at the top edge where the original one once did. Use the tray for your smaller items, then lift it up and place more items deep inside the trunk. The interior wood and tray have received two coats of polyurethane to preserve the wood. When removing the interior paper which was somewhat worn out looking, we did make sure to keep the original border and picture on the right hand side under the dome. This picture portrays a Victorian girl posing while holding a fan with birds on it. The other picture on the left hand side is a trunk maker's style picture of a Victorian lady posing. We have added this picture. Considering the age of this trunk, the interior is in pretty good condition. There are some typical stress cracks in various places on the interior bottom. If you have been waiting for a nice expensive dome top to purchase for a loved one as a lifetime lasting gift, then maybe this one is the one for you. The underside of this trunk is in decent condition. We have finished it and it still has the factory original metal casters, one at each corner and they do spin. It may be some time before we find another one this fancy. We never know what we are going to come across when we go out to purchase trunks to refinish.
