This is very fine old Fang two heads mask from Gabon. That kind of mask was used in the Ngil Association, which played political and judicial roles in Fang villages Ngil members acted as police and judges, revealing sorcerers (punished by death), handing down sentences to those who did not obey the law. Ngil masters were also known as peacekeepers, settling conflicts between clans and rival villages. Those masks were fearsome sight with dramatic effect of the fiber raffia strips. The French banned their use in 1910 following a series of ritual murders . After the ban, much information about Ngil society was gone, and there are very few well-documented examples of this kind of mask at present.
