These are two of the finest old S. Kirk & Son, Co. sterling repousse salt & pepper shakers that I have ever owned. They have been in my personal collection for decades and I am selling them now because I simply don't have the room for all of it. According to my original old Kirk documents the style of marking indicates production between 1903 to 1907. At this time Kirk's silversmiths individually crafted each piece by hand following a general pattern but adding their own personal touches. No two of these would be identical as is the case One view of each shaker is the same design, but with noticable variations in placement, but the remaining three are unique to each piece. They have different flowers and leaf placement varies and although you have to scrutinize them to realize this you can see the artistic result of a master craftsman. Unlike the newer Kirk number 58s t are no seams apparent and it always makes me wonder how they did that! T is no trace of a seam on the tops either! The repousse detailing is really quite exquisite and t is a lovely time acquired darkened patina which really shows the pattern to it's best advantage. I will leave any polishing up to their new owner. The photos were taken on a rainy day and may seem less gleaming than they really are if requested I will add more photos to the listing once the sun comes out. The shakers stand 4 inches tall and they are 1 3/4 inches across the widest part of the belly. They are marked S. Kirk & Son, Co. 925 over 1000, the older marking as mentioned with the first letter capitalised and taller in the name, and the number 7. T are no monograms, dings, dents or scratches to either piece. The lids fit properly nice and snug but not to tight. They stand straight, upright and any leaning in the photos is just an angle issue. The insides are clean with no evidence of deterioration or corrosion. It is truly rare to find such an old pair in exceptional condition and I know the winning bidder will be just delighted!
