Fantastic Signed Horner Griffin Oak Hall Bench ~ 1880 Very Unusual Theatrical Carvings,..Hamlet ...Pagliacci! We are offering two signed R.J. Horner of NYC pieces this week. Authentically signed Horner furniture is rare and are fast becoming excellent investment pieces. This is a particularly unusual piece, and we've never seen this model before. The carved theme is theatrical, and may have been made for a large opera house. Horners signature griffin carvings and elaborate crest adorn this bench, but its the other dynamic carvings that really draw the eye! Two massive incredibly carved barley twists rise off the arms supporting to carved busts, one of Shakespeare and the other, we haven't determined, but obviously of some notoriety. The life-like relief panels depict a jolly Hamlet and a tragic Pagliacci, mimicing the two classic masks of tragedy and comedy from ancient Greek theater. ~ Made of quarter-sawn oak and in its original finish, this is a very heavy sturdy piece ready for your home. The original Horner label is on the back. The lift up seat reveals a roomy blanket chest, perfect for many kinds of storage. ~ Condition is very good and sturdy. The measurements are 69" high, 57" wide, 23" deep, and a seat height of 18". Shipping by our truck will be between 250.00 and 550.00 depending on location.
