At the present time I have only one correctly made Federal Oil Blanket left to sale. I have made and sold over 300 of these. I am offering a correctly made Federal Painted Oil Blanket. Can be used for a Confederate impression also since many were picked up on the battlefield. These are made from the Federal Quartermaster Specifications and has the two extra grommets on the edge of one end so that you can use the Oil Blanket for a Shawl. The Quartermaster ordered it this way. I will include a copy of the actual Quartermaster order. These are much more effective than the poncho and will keep you dryer. Size is about 46"X 71" and is made of correct 8 oz Cotton Drill. Each blanket weighs about 2 pounds and they are not stiff. If you are an authentic campaigner, then this is for you. The coating is lamp black with linseed oil, turpentine and a little Japan dryer. Sized with a light coat of cornstarch to keep it from bleeding through. The hems on one side and end are 2" while on the other end and side is 1". The material cost for me to make only one of these are $27 and it takes several hours to make one. T's a seam almost down the middle as cotton drill was only 33.5" wide and it took two pieces to make a 46" wide painted oil blanket. With care these will last a lifetime and I send instructions on keeping it waterproof year after year. read more
