This piece is going to get alot of people's blood pumping really fast. Read this part VERY, VERY Carefully. I will be listing ALL OF THE CELESTIAL BLUE ITEMS MADE FOR LEVAY in upcoming auctions. This auction is for the Bowl pictured only. These pieces were made as a special order for Levay Distributing in 1980 by the world famous Fenton Art Glass Company of Williamstown West Virginia. T were a total of 8 individual shapes made, and I will be listing all 8 before I'm done (4 of which have already sold) and a sample basket that was sold through the giftshop. This piece is the SAMPLE basket. From what I've gatd owning all 8 of the shapes is darn near impossible due to the fact that They were only available in 1980, the limits set on these were so low and they were a special order made for another company (they were not part of the regular line). I'm also going to say that I'm sure how pretty these are is another contributing factor in why it's so hard to aquire all 8. This basket is Celestial Blue Satin Glass that has been Opalized toward the top, with the Wildrose and Bowknot pattern, and the Fenton trademark hexagonal double crimp edge. It is basically the 9 inch double crimped bowl that has had a basket handle applied to it. D. Austin Dallison is the person who applied the handle. I have it listed as the only known example because it isn't listed in any of the books or catalogs from Fenton or Levay and I know that only one other one has surfaced which was purchased by the museum and was damaged during transit to a glass show in Wisconsin making this the only one known at this time. It does have the Fenton logo on the bottom although it's somewhat hard to make out. (see photo below) It's about 9 inches tall and 9 inches across at the widest point. T is no factory ware # but the ware number for the bowl this piese was made from is 2823 ES should you like to call the Fenton Factory Museum to ask them about it. References to This pattern can be found on page 237 of John Walk's book FENTON GLASS COMPENDIUM 1970-1985. More information can be found on page 221 of another of Mr. Walk's books titled FENTON SPECIAL ORDERS 1940-1980, and a list with ware numbers of the 8 original pieces made in this pattern and color can be found in FENTON GLASS THE 1980s DECADE edited by James (Jim) Measell on page 70, and lastly A picture of the entire original collection can be found in the book FENTON MADE FOR OTHER COMPANIES Volume 2 1970-2005 by Carrie & Gerald Domitz on page 279. You'll notice in the last reference that the basket is'nt shon in the picture. I've included a photo of a close up of the pattern so you can compare it to the other pieces in these books. I have done alot of Fenton research myself and make sure that each piece I sell is researched fully before I list it so newer collectors don't have to wonder if what they are buying is the real thing or not. This would be a fabulous piece to add to your collection. The color is gorgeous as well as the shape, just an all around great piece. It's much prettier in person. This is a piece I recently purchased. The vase is in perfect condition and looks as if it were made yesterday, Fenton is so well known for their carnival and iridescent glass, but they are also good at all of the various types of glass they make to include opalescent glass and the use of optics.. T is no damage to the piece and you can expect it to arrive to you in MUSEUM QUALITY.
