Ferdinand de LESSEPS (1805 - 1894) French diplomat and promoter of the Suez Canal. Attempted a lockless canal through the ithsmus of Panama but was unsuccessful; the project eventually completed (with locks) by the United States in 1914. A.L.S. " Ferd de Lesseps " 2pp. 4to., (7x9 in.) Paris, 8 Mar. 1875, in French to a lady, thanking her for gifts for his children and commening on family developments, adding " ...We do not think at this moment of leaving Paris; and I hope that I shall stay during all the time of the absence of my two grand children who will leave in 15 days for Constantinople. I write you at this movement at a sitting of the Academy of Sciences while one is reading a memoir in which I do not interest myself much....
