Welcome and thank you for visiting Sweet Home Chicago Antiques!
This is a stunning brides basket or centerpiece set from the Victorian era. It features bird figurals on both the frame and the double-decorated bowl. The silver plate frame was crafted circa 1890 by the Adelphi Silver Plate Company of New York, New York. The condition of this frame is outstanding. It's one of the nicest handled frames we've owned. At first glance I though this had been re-plated, but after further inspection I've decided that it has just been very well cared for. Most oxidized finishes are lost when an item is re-plated, and this frame still has a dual finish on its feet. I've always enjoyed Adelphi holloware, because they were so creative with their designs. This holder has a large ornate griffin finial. Cast fretwork birds adorn the sides of the handles. In addition, the feet and decorative band encircling the well are to be seen to be appreciated. You would never think that this frame is 100 years old. The art glass bowl is a beauty, and is also in excellent condition. This pair is not original to each other (most aren't). T are no chips, cracks, flakes or evidence of repairs. The white spots on the photos are obviously light reflections. Upon inspection, I found minor wear to a few of the slender stem areas on the exterior, and only very minor wear to the rich gilt and enamel on the interior. The enamel decoration is still lush, and thick enough that it is raised. This is a beauty, and is worthy of a place in any fine collection. The bowl measures 7" across and 9-3/4" on the diagonal. The foot is 2-3/4" diameter, and the pontil is filled and polished. I'm unsure of the manufacturer, so I'll let you make that determination. The frame measures approximately 13-1/2" tall. The handles are 10-3/4" wide; the widest interior span is about 10-1/4". The interior of the well is about 2-13/16" diameter. It is appropriately stamped, "Adelphi Silver Plate Co., Quadruple Plate", along with the catalog number "046". The first record for the Adelphi Silver Plate Company was dated 1890. Their history is not well-documented, but my reference books have them going out of business sometime between 1904 and 1915. Judging by the Adelphi pieces we've owned, they were one of the better small concerns in production during that era. This is an opulent set with a reasonable reserve, and we hope it finds a great new home.
