LOT 333 Seller's Estimate: USD 1,500 - 2,500 (FIJI, TASMANIA, OCEANIA--EARLY PHOTOGRAPHS.) Album containing 57 mounted albumens of Oceanic peoples and locations, faintly titled on the spine "Fiji Islanders / ca. 1880". Oblong 4to, 230x300 mm, slightly later 1/2 green roan; some photos and mounts foxed, some mounts chipped. [Oceania, circa 1880-1890s] The photographer possesses a noteworthy eye for large-scale compositions and group portraits. The images are from a variety of island locations, the last fourth of which are labeled in and around Hobart, Tasmania. Other subjects include: islanders in traditional garb, some dressed for combat and carrying weapons; sugar cane plantations and factories; group portraits in large caves.
