This is a rare and quite superb Chinese soapstone carving. During our research, we have been informed it is from the Ming period of the 16th century. It would have been used by a chief or similar and held in the hand during a ceremony. Two important design features are the Phoneix and the dragon. Both important Chinese symbols. Both are related to rain and sun and are related to the harvest. The carving in soapstone is similar to both sides. Has a length of about 8.25inches with a max width of about 3inches. Considering the age, the overall condition is excellent and is without blemish. Besides being a fine CChinese 16th century soapstone carving from the Ming period, would also look fabulous displayed.
