An exceptionally fine brass pan bed warmer of unusually large proportions and outstanding folk art hammered designs that dates from the late 18th century.Found in Bucks County,Pennsylvania and undoubtedly of American and probable local origin. This magnificent and early example has a pan of huge dimensions at 12 1/2 inches across, made of a hammered brass sheet top and spun brass base.Fine piercings on the lid for ventilation of the coals or embers and hammered folk art designs of exceptional beauty. The central medallion is a type profusely used throughout the American Federal period,a spiraling floral star of delicate fern-like spikes. It is a motif found on finer maps of the period, inlaid furnitures and drawings. It`s execution is stunning, with alternating deep and light topical hammerings giving rich dimension to the emblem.Outward from this motif is a superb 5-pointed star comprised of feathery bird wings that is both glorious an highly unusual. The remainder of the face is patterned with whispy hammered spirals, daisies and crows feet, along with starry groupings of piercings bearing six holes each. These folk art representations are the finest I have encountered on such a piece, and are a superb picture of Revolutionary period American handwork in metal. The warmer has a long,well-turned hardwood handle of maple or chestnut that brings the overall piece to a staggering 49 inches in length in direct proportion to the oversized pan.The visible swirls of spun brass are evident on the reverse of the pan and it displays the typical copper rivets of the period.Highly adorned in the Pennsylvamia manner, this outstanding and early example is a profound testiment to the spirited artwork that 18th century American artisans embellished their ulitarian tools with to bring good spirits into an otherwise sparsely furnished abode. In very good condition and still functional if desired, but having some loss to the overturned edge of the bowl along the front from heavy use.The heavy soot stains within remain a testament to it`s winter workload over the ages. Also t is an early pegged repair to the brass/handle joiner point which may point to an old handle replacement,as the handle patina appears less than anticipated on so early a piece. This is only speculation due to the good proportions and turnings on the wood typical of these tools. A beautiful early American bed warmer in wrought brass and turned wood from the Revolutionary period.Of grand size and stupendous hammered folk art.A splendid tool that must have been used in a large household of many beds,or perhaps an inn like the old Black Bass Hotel on the Deleware(w George Washington and his men were in legend sent packing due to the loyalist ownership).Still gleaming with the artistry capable of warming a frigid room, even if it never makes it under another sheet.Period 1780-1800.
