This superb wooden 19th century African tribal art ebony wood carving of a fertility male was part of a recent house clearance of a gamekeepers estate. His father was a hunter and travelled to areas such of Africa, the oriental countries of China, Japan with other visits to Australia and many parts of Europe. Whilst in his pursuit of game, he imported many items of tribal art, carvings in many materials, furniture and various icons from the 18th, 19th and later centuries. This is a superb ebony carving of a seated male portrayed as a fertility figure. Wonderful intricate carving of the seated male. Has a superb tribal hat with jewellery. During our research we have been informed it is certainly from the 19th century and is of an African tribal origin. The overall height is about 21inches with a max width of about 6inches. Base size about 4.5 x 5.25inches. Museum number to base. Condition: considering the age, the overall condition is excellent with no major blemishes. Besides being a very collectable 19th century ebony carved fertility figure of African origin, would also look fabulous displayed.
