mid-19th c., stenciled "Alexander Roux, 478 B-way, N.Y." twice, the rectangular top with gadrooned molding over a skirt with two drawers, scrolled aprons, pendants, on barley twist legs with scroll cabochon and barley twist stretcher, turned legs, casters, height 30 ½ width 48 in., depth 25 1/2 in.
Note: Born in 1813 and trained as an ebeniste in Paris, Alexander Roux emigrated to New York City and established a workshop and warerooms on Broadway Avenue specializing in Rococo Revival items. By mid-century, Roux employed 125 people, and was producing wares in the highest mode, expanding his repertoire to include the most fashionable examples of Revival styles before most other American cabinet makers. Landscape architect and critic Andrew Jackson Downing praised Roux, "In New York, the rarest and most elaborate designs, especially for drawing room and library use, are to be found at the warehouse or Roux…"
