c. 1840, attributed to John Needles, Baltimore, the octagonal segmented top of figural veneers, ogee molded skirt with trefoil drops, arched stem with beaded moldings and turned finial, plinth base ending in scalloped ogee bracket feet, height 28 in., diameter 36 in.
Note: The precision placement of the finely figured veneers, particularly the tight symmetry of the radial veneers on the top of lot 257 is indicative of the work of Quaker cabinet maker John Needles (Baltimore, wc. 1808-1853). Further, the scalloped skirt, reticulated column, turned pendants, plinth base, and bracket feet on this example are very close to those on a labeled Needles pier table in the Anderson collection exhibited at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.
