This is an absolutely first-rate walnut drop-leaf dining table. No apologies needed.
Originally listed at $795, the price has been reduced to $600 on 2/5/05. A fine table for either price. If you need a large table that has the classic stance of a 150-year-old gate-leg Sheraton table, is in excellent condition, and has a price tag that wont hurt, this is for you! The first thing you need to know is that this table is a happy wedding of two separate tables. I found the base in one place, and not long thereafter found the top and leaves 100 miles away! They were not originally together, but there were no alterations (other than several new screw holes) needed. When fully opened, the table measures 48 x 72 inches. Distance between the legs on the ends is sufficient that 2 people could sit opposite each other (with the leaves down) with ease. The materials are top quality. The walnut lumber is old growth, tight-grained, and showing no sapwood anywhere, the legs are perfect - no doggy-tooth marks, no vacuum cleaner bruises - and the top and leaves are straight and true, showing only the usual minor dings that happen with careful use. The top and the leaves are made up of several narrow pieces of walnut ( walnut is a tree that does not grow to any great size) with cleats on the bottom to maintain straightness. See the photos - this is expert craftsmanship. The base of this table was probably made about 1930, and the top and leaves perhaps a bit earlier. Our staff (actually, thats sort of pretentious - we have one guy out back there doing all the heavy lifting, sniffing all those fumes and getting a little funny in the afternoons, but he does great restoration work, and seems happy, when hes coherent) aims to produce a finish that looks like a well-tended, 100-year-old finish, rather than that over-refinished, glossy look so often seen. We rarely use any stain, so the color you see is the natural wood, just as it was years ago. And the best part is, that the color and finish will mellow and become more rich with time and use. Our finishes tend to get better and better with age , as the areas that are frequently touched acquire a nice, seemingly century-old, patina. Please dont hesitate to ask questions, request more photos, etc. , and please take time to view our other offerings. We have some fine antique American 18th and 19th Century furniture, nautical antiquities, and a few rare antique tools.
