EXTRA FINE Appalachian Split Oak Buttocks or Egg Rib Basket This is an incredible oak splint buttocks or egg basket. Made in the southeastern Appalachian mountains, it is finely woven with white oak and has dark stripes which were probably dyed with walnut hulls. Constructed with a bentwood rim and frame, narrow weavers and finely tapered ribs, it has a beautiful deep dark patina suggesting considerable age. The bottom is lighter in color, as it should be, being as less light reached that area. I am told because of the dyed stripes, this basket is possibly Cherokee. If anyone has more information that will confirm this, I will add it to the description. Will make a wonderful addition to your basket collection. Listed with no reserve. SIZE : Approximately 9" tall (to top of handle) x 10" long x 9" wide. CONDITION : I examined the basket thoroughly and found two breaks. Both are located at the rim beside each other (see photo). Because of the location and the very narrow width of the weavers, they are not really noticeable at first glance. T is a natural knot hole in the rim which is visible in a couple of the photos but this is not considered to be a defect. Otherwise, the basket is in excellent vintage condition. SHIPPING : Buyer to pay shipping via USPS Priority Mail according to your Zip Code. I happily combine shipping for multiple auction wins at a discount when possible. INSURANCE : Optional. Georgia residents please pay your county's sales tax. I guarantee all items I sell. Bid with confidence and thanks for looking.
