Well, is something you don't see every day..... Fresh from a fine local estate comes a most extraordinary piece of furniture. This four panel allegorical marquetry screen depictsa nude Eve walking through the Garden of Eden and picking the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge as the snake watches nearby. The detail and execution are unbeleivable. Multiple speceies and colors of wood are used. The branch in the top left corner of each panel is carved in relief and looks as if it is growing out of the screen's frame. The pictures speak for themselves. The amount of time it must have taken to produce this is mind boggleing. I believe the screen is Europen and lean heavily toward it being Swedish in origin(it could also be Italian). I can find no signature or tag. The only clue are the hinges which have the letters "BISA" impressed into them. The woman I purchased this screen from told me she had bought it at an estate sale several years earlier. It reminds me very much of pieces I have seen by Mjolby Intarsia of Sweden, although this piece is on a much grander scale. Each panel meaures approx 21 9/16" wide x 79" tall making the overal width of the screen approx 86"! The screen is in excellent condition with no damage and only light signs of wear. The varnish has yellowed a bit on the last panel and in a few other areas, but does not detract from the screen's overall beauty. A piece like this would most certaily sell in the $10,000.00 range in a New York or Los Angeles Gallery(perhaps more if it could be properly attributed). My reserve is a fraction of that. This screen would fit perfectly into a home filled with high design pieces by Piero Fornasetti, James Mont, Gio Ponti, and T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings. Please feel free to email me with any questions.
