A great example of mid-century modern Italian art glass, from the famed Murano firm of Ercole Barovier & Toso. This is an example of their "Intarsio" (intarsia) work, a bold abstract patchwork design, in this case a vibrant red alternating with a slightly smoky clear glass. (Similar examples of this technique are illustrated in Art of the Barovier, Glassmakers in Murano 1866- 1972, edited by Marina Barovier; see page 193 in particular). The paper company label affixed to the well-finished base is of the type used by Barovier ca. 1956-1970. (Do note that part of that label is missing as shown.) T is an additional foil label on the side, which reads "AA Murano" in a circle with a palm or floral device at the center. Excellent condition, no chips or cracks, with the usual and expected small inblown bubbles and t T is also an area about 3/4" dia. and nearly opposite of the foil label, illustrated , which looks like an encased squiggle or gather within the glass; the area is slightly raised but smooth and glassy on the surface and I assume it occurred during the glassmaking process. A wonderful large scale, this vase measures approximately 7 3/4" dia. at the rim x 13 5/8" h. The Barovier family is often credited with the revival of the Venetian glass industry in the 19th century and their ever-evolving and forward-thinking concepts of glass for the next century-plus left an undeniable and indelible impression on the art glass world. And this grand vase, which belonged to a world-traveled American diplomat with an affinity for all things Italian, is a prime example of that innovation.
