Fine Child's Transferware Pearlware Miniature Toy Soup Plate FLORAL CHINTZ Staffordshire Englandc. 1840 This is a rare miniature transferware soup plate, circa 1840, originally part of a complete miniature children's dinner service. The little plate is 3-3/4" in diameter, with a gentle 10-sided octagonal construction and flat bottom. Extremely well potted, to the standards usually only seen in full-size Staffordshire table wares, transfer printed in a rich sepia brown with an overall floral chintz sheet print featuring a hanging fuchsia and tangled vines, finished with pearlware glaze. The plate is unmarked and the pattern name and maker is not known for certain. The pattern is documented in Doris Lechler's English Toy China as pattern #191, illustrated on page 72 of the book. Lechler attributes the pattern to Charles Meigh, a pottery maker in the Staffordshire region of England in the early to mid-19th century. The plate is in very good condition, with a tight age line off the rim, visible from the rear but hard to see from the front, and no cracks, chips, or repairs. T are stilt marks on the rear and glaze on the edge is slightly ponded, all original to the making and typical of these early wares. Glaze crazing on the rear, consistent with age. Offered as is, it is a gorgeous little piece! Children's transferware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after.
