Child's Brown Transferware
Miniature Plate BIRD John and Robert Godwin ~Staffordshire England c. 1835 This delightful toy transferware plate, circa 1835, was originally part of an early miniature children's tea service. The plate measures 5" in diameter. It is transfer printed in a rich chocolate brown with pearlware glaze. It is decorated in the scarce BIRD pattern, depicting six exotic birds on flowering tree branches and fibre floral allover detailing. A very elaborate pattern very little white space. The plate is marked with the pattern name "BIRD" and the initials of the maker, John and Robert Godwin, an early 19th century pottery manufactory in the Staffordshire region of England . The pattern is quite scarce. The plate is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. Minor imperfections in the making process, including a few stray speckles of brown paint, typical of these early wares. Glaze crazing, consistent with age. The piece is nicely potted and the transfers were printed with great deal of attention to detail.
