A nice antique Dutch silver miniature windmill - possibly a Jewish spice container, c. 1910 Description: On offer is this nicely detailed miniature silver windmill with moving wings. A small human figure, representing the miller, is placed before the door of the windmill. The windmill also has a moving flag on top. The top part of this item is detachable from it's base, fitting very tightly.These subtle object bears Dutch silver hallmarks. It bears a tiny dagger mark, which indicates the silver fineness of .835/1000, accompanied by the silversmith's mark 'JvDH' for Jan van Dijk, active as a silversmith in the city of Hoorn (The Netherlands) from 1901 onwards. This silversmith hallmark is struck twice on the item. The Dutch silver dagger hallmark which is struck three times, dispersed on this item, was used from 1906 onwards, which makes it easy to date this item rather exactly: shortly after 1906, c. 1910.It is known that similar items were used as a spice container in Dutch Jewish families in the past. The detachable top very much points into the direction of a Havdalah ceremonial purpose. Similar spiceboxes (or Besamim box) are depicted in books on Judaica, a.o. A Collectors' Guide to Judaica by Jay Weinstein (1985), page 67The solid silver miniature windmill stand nearly 3,5 inches (88 mm) high, weighing 28,2 grams grams. The highly decorative object is in excellent condition, as visible on the pictures. I guarantee age (nearly one hundred years old, c.1910) and authenticity of this interesting judaica collector's item from The Netherlands.
