ORNATE VICTORIAN SILVER SEWING SET NOTE: This auction is only for the silver cased sewing set. Other items seen in the styled shot are not included, and may already be sold or may be listed at a later time. This rare, exquisitely ornate sewing set in it's original box is from the renowned retailers Mappin & Webb. Founded in 1774 by Jonathan Mappin, Mappin & Webb is one of the UK's leading retailers of fine jewellery and silverware. In 1897 the company was granted a Royal Warrant and today Mappin & Webb is silversmith to HRH Queen Elizabeth II and to His Royal Highness Prince Charles. This set is a rare find. The handles are all sterling silver with elaborate chased decoration, all dating between 1895 and 1897 with maker's marks very difficult to read because of the small size and intricate detailing. The set includes three scissors, a corkscrew, an awl and a button hook, needle case and thimble. The replacement thimble is steel, as are the blades of the scissors and other implements, and the steel parts bear the Mappin & Webb stamp. The velvet-lining of the case is in good condition, the silk lid lining is somewhat faded but bearing the Mappin & Webb insignia, while the gilt decorated leather exterior of the box is a little worn as may be expected for the age of the piece. The tools are all solid and in working order, with just the slightest movement in the handles of the large scissors. This superb set will appeal to lovers of antique sewing items and it is a highly decorative collectable piece as well. Starting at a very reasonable price for such a pretty antique item. Thank you for looking and good luck if you choose to bid!
