This fantastic Victorian sofa is available for pick-up only. However , I will work with any moving/transport company you may select. Thanks to eBay, t are now several "blanket wrap" pick up and delivery services all over the U.S. (I cannot offer this piece to buyers outside the United States - maybe Canada.)
OK . . . Let's get to it! This is, without question, the finest example of American hand carved furniture I've ever discovered, and it was done entirely by hand - without the availability of any power tools. The more closely you look, the more you'll appreciate the skill involved. I discovered the piece a few months ago over in Bartholomew County, Indiana. (It was in the estate of a very well-known and wealthy lady.) The family told me their Grandmother had had it reupholstered sometime back in the 1970s. You'll likely want to have it done to suit your own tastes, but it is perfectly usable as it is. It is worn and t but nothing distracting or remarkable for the age. I'd feel comfortable using it just as it is, and "comfortable" is certainly the word for it. That big fat down cushion beckons even as I'm writing it up. Total Length = 81" No comes the exciting part: The carvings. This panel and its mirror image surround the turfted central panel. To call it complex would be an understatement. That's either a hummingbird or some other sort. It appears to be feeding on a pomegranate. (Or something with lots of seeds inside.) at 341, I have two "Prime Directives:" A guitar! Well . . . Some sort of stringed, parlor instrument anyway. That is a motif you've very likely not seen before this. I certainly haven't. Fabulous ! The piece also retains its original finish. Nothing has been repaired. NONE ARE NEEDED! It's in wonderful condition. And - Nothing has been replaced or restored including the feet, skirt and the elaborate carvings. No disappointments. The two other panels along the back feature torches. The rope carving all around is really amazing. Can you imagine the time it took to accomplish such a piece!? That is the central crest at the top of the back. I assure you - No finer example can be found. It is right at 110 years old, plus or minus a decade or two. I abolutely guarantee you'll be thrilled.
