A stunning matched pair of early oil lamps in pressed flint glass of the colonial period.Mid 19th century,probably Pittsburgh Bakewell and Pears lamps done in Giant Sawtooth pattern.Very heavy gleaming leaded glass,the lamps being pressed in two parts and annealed together with large molten discs at the bases of the fonts.Magnificent and rare examples of this early pattern,considered among the colonials among the names in pattern glass.Elongated fonts with large protruding diamond points,dome tops and 8-sided pinched bases that terminate in flaring 8-sided knops.Hollow,6-sided balluster stems and platform bases.The pair are pressed of thick flint which irradesces beautifully in light,particularly on the superbly quilted fonts.The glass displays typical early characteristics in the straw marks,bubbles and particles of uninfused sand.They stand about 10 3/4 inches high and are 4 1/2 inches from point to point on the bases.Both affixed with heavy brass burner collars that appear original.The lamps are both in excellent condition,which is quite rare with this pattern having such vulnerable protruding edge points.T is minor table wear and typical but light mold roughness around the base undersides.I found but 2 small chips to the diamond points,one near the font base of one lamp,the other at the top of the font on the second piece.They are certainly a regal pair of fluid lamps,and most certainly from the earliest period of production of the Sawtooth pattern.One is rarely found these days standing by itself,let alone still acompanied by it`s mate.They have the crisp lines and weighty appeal that only early flint glass has when held in your hand and assures you of it`s authenticity.A wonderful find indeed.Period circa 1840-1860.
