Antique Carved Ivory Polychrome Kwan-Yin Holding a Peacock From a Farmington, Connecticut Estate collection of vintage and antique ivory comes this unusually intricate Antique Carved Polychrome Kwan-yin Statue. She stands 5-1/2" tall and weighs 121 grams. The main body is carved from a solid piece of ivory; the head is attached with an insertion at the neck as is often the case with these older carvings. This beautiful statue has been carved with an amazing amount of detail and high relief. The goddess or princess is richly robed with fabric that is heavily "embroidered", textured and tasseled. Her obi has an intricated fish-scale pattern; her shawl and robes are hemmed with Greek-key and palmetto borders. She holds a finely woven and tasseled fan in her lowered right hand. Her left hand supports a spread-winged peacock or mythological bird-of-paradise. Her face is particularly regal, with a high forehead, fine, smooth features, and a slightly downward-looking gaze. Her hair is swept high, ornamented with an elaborate comb and tasseled headress. The polychrome coloration is primarily in shades of red, green and black. T is some wear to the colors, but most of the color is visible and the patina is excellent. T are a couple very small age lines in the ivory, she is in otherwise exceptional antique condition. ***** [ PLEASE NOTE: read more
