an amazing staged photograph of two unknown soldiers contemplating their next draw with lady luck. Perhaps they are gambling, although the only stakes on the upturned wooden crate are a revolver and single shot bar hammer pistol lying next to the rest of the deck. If the sly-looking pair intended to convey a message beyond innocent leisure then the story remains locked in the context of 1861. The fellow at left wears a five-button sack coat usually associated with Wisconsin troops and knee-high private purchase cavalry boots. The man on the right with his cards tipped slightly to the camera has on a single-breasted infantry greatcoat. Neither soldier shows any identifying insignia. A contemporary identification via the consignor relates that the image came from the `Hyatt Family, Cincinnati.` A truly spectacular Civil War image precisely because it doesn`t fit the mold.
