Fine Vintage Cuna Mola, Parrots & Mr. Flower ABOUT THIS MOLA Size: Approximately 17" by 13" Color: Vibrant, unfaded Condition: Beautiful and Fine Stitching No holes, no stains, no tears Date: Mid 1970s or earlier Notice the extremely fine and even stripes of color with almost invisible stitching and exquisitely tiny chain stitched detail. This Mola features excellent workmanship and, just as in a quality painting, has a harmonious balance between light and dark colors. The fabrics are fresh and bright - perhaps never worn. All of the Molas I will be posting in the next few weeks were made for use. Stitch marks around the edges are visible imperfections that indicate that these Molas were not simply made to sell to tourists. Molas are handmade by the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama . The women, and some men, use traditional methods and designs to create hand made wearable works of art. Each Mola forms part of the traditional costume of a Kuna woman. The cloth panels form the bodice and back of the blouses worn by the women. Each piece is unique and features complex designs made with multiple layers of cloth in a reverse appliqué technique. Several layers of different-colored cloth are sewn together, and the design is then formed by cutting parts of each layer away. The edges of the layers are then sewn down. Sales only to the US and Canada.
