You are viewing a historically important and stunningly beautiful aesthetic grapes, leaves and vines three branch handle loving cup by Gorham. This piece has it all, featuring highly relief and 3-dimensional grape clusters, curly vines with corkscrew ends, leaves and three strikingly life-like branch handles. The realism, quality, craftsmanship and aesthetic beauty of this loving cup is truly unsurpassed, the best of its kind. It is the work of a master silvermsith. Made by Gorham in 1899, when they were making some of their finest aesthetic movement and award winning sterling holloware. It was pulled out of their archives in 1969 and presented as a 1 st . place award trophy from the Oak Tree Racing Association, given to the Howard B. Keck horse racing team, featuring William Shoemaker. Howard Keck was the billionare philanthropist who started the Keck Foundation and William Shoemaker is without question the most famous and successful jockey who ever lived. Aparently Howard Keck was an avid horsebreeder and racer who hired Shoemaker as his Jockey for many years. They won many races as a team. This loving cup trophy is built like a tank and is extremely massive at 1965 grams, that is 69.5 oz of thick, heavy gauge sterling silver. The trophy is so heavy it's hard to lift out straight with one arm. The side walls of the cup are almost 1/8" thick. Marked on the bottom with the Gorham Hallmarks...Lion, Anchor, G - Sterling - 8 Pint. Also marked with the 3 sided trident, Gorham date mark for 1899. This loving cup is truly one of a kind. Condition is MINT. No dings, scratches, repairs or monograms asside from the inscriptions, which I would assume give add significant collectors value to the piece. Willie Shoemaker 1st. Place Trophys are hard to find ! and one of this quality and antiquity...how could you do better? I have never polished the trophy in the 2 years I owned it and it still retains much of its original patina. I have only lightly cleaned it twice with a silver cloth.
