Firkin âe" Wooden bucket with fitted lid and handle This gorgeous, yet sturdy, wooden cask was handmade circa 1900. A Firkin was built to store sugar. This one probably came from my grandparentâe(tm)s dairy farm in Northern NY . My parents used it to store knitting, and later magazines. But it would also do a great job of hiding TV remotes. With the smoothly fitted lid, you can store things on top of this bucket or use it beside a chair to rest a beverage. This firkin is unusual in that it has the original clear finish, not paint! Never been painted. The staves (side boards) are molded for strength, and they have a firm hold on the wood bottom. The sides, bottom and top lid are solid pine âe" no plywood, no veneer. The bentwood handle is sturdy oak, pegged to the firkin with wooden buttons. The bentwood bands may be maple or birch, which bends better than pine. Dimensions are 9-1/2âe tall X 10âe wide at base tapering to 9-1/2 wide at the lid. This is a solid unit, despite the fact it was used for years and shows normal wear and tear. On close inspection I did notice the wooden band around the lid had started to split and someone glued it back. That does not detract from the excellent fit of lid to bucket, or strength of the lid.
