This is for 31 first day covers all hand signed by famous aviators and completely authentic. All are in unused condition and have been sitting in storage for years. There are a total of 31 and this collection would total at retail close to $500.00. I will not part these out because it has been taking me far too long to sell of the collection piece by piece. You can buy the entire lot of 31 and of course resell the ones you may not want for a larger profit. Please feel free to ask any and all questions. This is a no reserve auction with a very low starting bid considering the amount of covers autographed and what they are worth. I will combine shipping on multiple auctions of course. The first day cover numbers are broken down below followed by a history of each of the aviators.
Please remember that each cover comes from a printing of 1,000 with only about 50-100 of each run being actually signed by the famous aviators so you are looking at a very rare chance to own a number of covers that you just can't get anymore. I am letting these go at a very low price so if someone else wants to "corner the market" in a sense. Again please feel free to ask any questions and thanks for looking. Abit of history on Jimmie Mattern from Wikipedia James Joseph "Jimmie" Mattern (March 8, 1905 – December 17, 1988) was an American aviator . Mattern undertook a number of aviation world records, including twice attempting to break the world record for aerial circumnavigation set by Wiley Post and Harold Gatty . Both attempts failed, the second in 1933 resulted in a crash landing and subsequent rescue by Eskimos and Sigizmund Levanevsky in Siberia . In a twist of fate, Mattern would join the search for Levanevsky after he went missing in 1937. Levanevsky was never found. Starting in 1938, Mattern was a Lockheed test pilot on the P-38 Lightning and developed a technique that significantly reduced training accidents. In 1946 he was diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic with a ruptured blood vessel in his brain and was unable to fly again because of the condition. After losing his ability to fly, Mattern and his wife became real estate brokers and then operated a travel agency. He also supported the space program, attended three Apollo launches and had his pilot's license carried to the moon aboard Apollo 11 .[4] He also marketed aviation calculators known as the Mattern computer, a course and mileage slide rule , in the late 1940s.A little bit of history about Polando: Preparation for Russell Boardman and John Polando's record-breaking two-day flight from the New World to the new Republic of Turkey lasted about two years. Though this was to be the first direct flight from the continental United States to a Moslem country, it was not the first visit to Turkey made by A...
