This work represents probably the single most extensive investigation of shallow aquatic resources ever undertaken at the Hawaiian Islands. The Shore Fishes volume is Jordan and Evermann's classic treatise on over 400 fish species (excluding the deep sea fishes) native to the Hawaiian Islands and vicinity. Detailed descriptions are provided for each genus and species of fish together with profuse illustrations and comments concerning distribution and abundance. These fish thrive in the surf zone, coral reefs, and shallow open waters surrounding the islands and are the best known species to snorkelers, scuba divers, and fisherman.
