Nice Refinished Antique Flat Top Steamer Trunk With Straps & Buckles and Tray When we received this trunk, it was in need of restoration. We have removed the canvas, exposing the base wood. The base wood looks to be poplar while the outer slat boards appear to be oak or ash. All wooden surfaces have been finished with three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. The wood has some typical character marks which include some stress cracks, some older nicks and dings, and some small areas of discoloration in the wood. T is a large stress crack going all the way across the back. We did glue one of the stress cracks together at the bottom front so t wouldn't be a large gap. This trunk at one time had straps with buckles that must have deteriorated away many years ago. Tfore, we have run a pair of straps with buckles in the same location w the original ones once were. These straps with roller buckles in addition to the latches, can be buckled to secure the trunk's top to it's base. The side handles were also missing and have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. The metal components have been brush painted by hand in a nice black and gold pattern. They are not brass. The center lock is original, although it does not appear to work. This chest is a true flat top with no arch and could be used as a coffee table or storage chest within your home. are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 32 1/2 inches, from floor to top is 22 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 18 1/2 inches. Going to the exterior bottom or underside of this trunk, t was some metal missing and we have put a piece of metal in that area. We have also patched some of the side metal with glue. The bottom has the four metal casters and we have taken the time to finish the bottom to make the trunk fairly clean for placement anyw within your home. Going to the interior of this trunk, t appeared to be quite a few areas of grayish discoloration on the bottom boards. So we have put new bottom over these boards. All of the paper has been removed from the interior since it was worn. The interior wood has received two coats of polyurethane to preserve the wood and eliminate any offensive odors. We have included a trunk maker's style picture on the underside of the top. It portrays a farmer plowing his field by hand behind two oxen. A tray has been made to rest at the top edge w the original one once did. Use this tray for your smaller items, then you can lift it up and place your larger items deep inside the trunk. Overall, this one has come a long ways from when we started with it. We did the best we could and it has turned out half decent.
