ANTIQUE WOODEN FLAX SPINNING WHEEL RARE ''1800'S This gorgeous Antique Spinning Wheel detailed throughout with ivory pegs. I believe this is European. I'm not an expert, but I believe this gorgeous old spinning wheel is from the 1800's. It measures about 30 1/2" high and 15 1/2" across at the widest point. The base is about 14"wide. The distaff is a separate unit and measures approx. 68 inches high and constructed in sections. I believe the peg-work to be ivory. This piece is definitely very old. T are not any identifying marks, unless they are obsured or I am not looking in the correct location. It has a wonderful patina. If you know how to work this thing, then you already know more than I do. The wheel is approximately 13" in diameter constructed of (3) separate sections and adjoined together in some sort of "rubic cube" fashion. I mean, if you were given this thing, disassembled, for Christmas 25 years ago and it didn't come with directions, it would probably still be in the box in your attic or closet. Somebody had way too much time on his or her hands to engineer this thing. Then to "actually" make it--ya, right!! The craftsmanship detail is exquisite yet simple. I can locate only (1) steel nail in the entire unit and the other one is missing. These are located on the very top cross member that supports the vertical "wooden" screw adjustment mechanism. As condition goes: The Wheel: The unit is missing a couple of the pegs. These pegs--which remind me of "Bishops" in a chess set. T are (5) inside the wheel, between the spokes. I believe t should be (6). I say "believe" because I'm not entirely convinced that a "Bishop" goes t But to err on the side on caution--let me say that this "Bishop" is indeed gone. Staying with the wheel; it is in really good condition. It is well constructed and not inhibited in the least as quality goes. It shows signs of aging (i.e. blemishes, scratches and dirt/dust). The base of the unit: Structurally very sound. T is, what I thought to be steel nails, that fasten the foot petal to the cross member. However, upon further study, I discovered that these are, in fact, wooden pegs. Anyway, (1 of 2) is missing and appears to have broken off at the base. The other is still present and accounted for--I don't know how it survived but it did. The finish has signs of aging and the wood is pitted in the usual fashion wood ages before it reaches that "petrified" stage. A tell-tale sign of "OLD." Take it from someone who is starting to get that look as well. No, I'm not the original owner!! The top assembly of the unit: On the highest peak, t appears to have been either a "Bishop" or some other piece that has broken off at the base. I have nothing to compare to this missing idol, so I cannot say with any degree of certainty, what was t On the very top cross-member, t should be (2) of those "Bishop" fellows. Well, one is broken off at the base and is no longer with us. On the same cross-member, t are/were (2), and we go again into our chess match, "Pond" shaped pegs--one on each end. One of these is broken off at the base. (If you look closely at the photo, you can see the side that the "Bishop" is missing and immediately below that--something took out both the "Bishop" and the "Pond." The cross-member directly below the above mentioned has a "notch" taken out of the wood--right below the "Pond" that is right below the "Bishop." I'm beginning to see a pattern --shall we speculate that the same "something" that took the "Bishop" and the "Pond" is responsible for this heinous crime? Nah, lets refer to them as "isolated" incidents. The bobbin/pulley assembly: I'm assuming that this is what it is referred to. The bobbin apparatus has this pulley thing attached to it.
