Hi, I'm Hew. I have enjoyed collecting flow blue, polychrome and transferware since 1970. Alas, it is now necessary for me to simplify life, downsize and make a portion of my collection available to others. I have also placed several pieces in my antique shop booth. My first preference is to sell to my fellow eBayers, so please let me know ASAP if I need to retrieve this piece for you. Cheers! This is an intriguing polychromed mulberryware oriental scene transfer Staffordshire compote, circa mid 1800s . This uniquely shaped and contoured pedestal stoneware dish is 12" long, 8 3/4" wide and 2 1/4" tall. The rim, in addition to its scalloping, is embossed at the handles. The transfer overlays the embossing. The pattern is not identified. The mulberry transfer is polychromed with green, bluegreen, reddish pink, burnt orange, mauve, yellow, mustard brown at the rim and peach luster accents. The contrast of the decorating against the white background is striking. An impressed 'B' on the bottom may indicate that it was made by Thomas Barlow pottery (1849-82), however, identifying a potter by this single letter is dangerous, as numerous potters used this lone letter during the mid 1800s. This venerable dish is remarkably free of cracks, chips, flakes, utensil marks and repairs. T is mild, age-expected crazing, some of which is stained but isolated to the bottom of the piece. The polychroming and luster are very much intact. The stoneware dish exhibits a healthy solidness when tapped. I do not say lightly that this is a superb piece at an excellent price. I have collected flow blue and polychrome since 1970, but now find it necessary to downsize and simplify my collection. I would recommend that this piece can be used for display and serving. In order to keep prices reasonable, I present these listings in a no frills manner. I also avoid playing with Reserve pricing. I strive to set a price that is fair, and to state clear and reasonable shipping costs. Shipping (basic, U.S.) for this substantial piece will not exceed $11.00. I always pack carefully, however, insurance is always a good idea, and I will add this unless requested not to. Items can be combined for further savings on shipping.
